Grants of up to $50,000 to Colorado nonprofit organizations, government agencies, schools, and tribes for programs that promote the health and well-being of residents in eligible counties. Applicants must contact program staff prior to submitting an application. Programs must benefit residents in the following counties: Grand, Jackson, Moffat, Rio Blanco, Routt, Mesa, Eagle, Garfield, Lake, Pitkin, Summit, Delta, Gunnison, Montrose, Ouray, Archuleta, Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata, Montezuma, San Juan, and San Miguel counties.

The Focus Area Fund supports General Operating grants to organizations that deliver outcomes aligned with the Foundation’s core focus: to provide for basic needs, and to increase access to and affordability of health care. 

Basic Needs

  • Food (food banks and pantries, meal services, food-related equipment & delivery vehicles)
  • Housing (emergency shelters, safe houses, rental/mortgage assistance)
  • Transportation (medical, dial-a-ride vouchers, bus passes)
  • Safety (domestic violence, sexual assault, child advocacy, in-home parent education & child abuse prevention)

Physical Health

  • Dental screening & service
  • Visual/hearing screening & services
  • Medical screening & services
  • Animal assisted PT, OT
  • Health navigator, promotora
  • Hospice/palliative/home health care
  • Securing health insurance

Behavioral Health

  • Mental health counseling & therapy
  • Crisis response
  • Suicide prevention
  • Substance abuse treatment & therapy
  • Substance abuse prevention
  • Animal-assisted behavioral health therapies
  • Grief counseling

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be a 501(c)(3), a 509(a) or a governmental, tribal, school, or public entity, or use a fiscal sponsor.

Ineligible for funding:
• Capital construction or endowment campaigns
• Debt reduction or loans
• Educational institutions, except for programs that align with our mission
• Environmental stewardship programs
• Individuals
• Marketing plans and materials
• Policy, advocacy, or research
• Political causes, candidates, organizations, or campaigns
• Religious organizations for religious purposes
• Special events
• Sponsorships for events, conferences, speakers
• Travel, conferences, group meetings, or seminars
• Organizations or projects that unlawfully discriminate with regard to employees, volunteers, delivery of services, or clients served based on age, sex, religion/creed, race, color, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, marital status, military or veteran status, pregnancy, or genetic information

- Clarifying Questions Period: Oct. 10 - 20, 2022
- Award Notification: Beginning December 8, 2022

All applications must be submitted online no later than 5 p.m. by the due date.

In each funding cycle, the first step is to schedule a pre-application Zoom meeting with staff. This meeting is required for all applicants, whether returning or new.

Both awarded and declined applicants will be contacted first by phone, and then by a follow up letter.
