Grants of up to $10,000 to Colorado nonprofits and government agencies for programs and projects that strengthen families and communities and help individuals become productive and responsible citizens. The Foundation has a special interest in self-sufficiency, community development, and programs aimed at the economically disadvantaged, the young, the elderly and the disabled. The Foundation is also dedicated to funding efforts in rural Colorado. General operating or program/project requests within the Foundation's funding areas are accepted.

Anschutz Family Foundation typically provides grants to Colorado nonprofit organizations offering programs and services that fit within one or more of our grant funding areas:

  • Self-Sufficiency
  • Homeless & Disadvantaged
  • Youth Development
  • Early Childhood Development
  • Community & Capacity Building
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Seniors

The Foundation looks for:

  • Alignment with the Foundation’s mission and interests
  • Clearly presented goals, objectives and strategies
  • Provision of unduplicated, needed programs and services
  • Sustainable and diversified funding streams
  • Solid financial statements and cash reserves
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Proven track record of success with positive outputs and outcomes
  • Effective and qualified leadership
  • Engaged and committed board of directors with 100% making a meaningful financial contribution to the organization
  • Strong, effective and ongoing organization and program evaluation
  • Community buy-in and support evidenced through donations, volunteer engagement, collaborations and partnerships
  • Utilization of best practices and principles across all levels of the organization

Estimated Size of Grant:

Typical grants range between $5,000-$10,000, but do not exceed 10 percent of an organization’s annual budget.

Term of Contract:

The Foundation does not generally support multi-year requests.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organization must be classified as one of the following:
- A 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity
- Independent sponsored project of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit acting as a fiscal sponsor
- Government or tax-supported public entity

Activities or programs must take place in Colorado.

The Foundation does not typically fund:
- Organizations with annual budgets in excess of $5 million
- Organizations in leadership transition (i.e. interim director)
- Education (primary or secondary)
- Health care, mental health or specific disease
- Start-ups
- Arts and culture
- Religious organizations for religious purposes
- Capital campaigns/building construction
- Grants to individuals
- Multi-year commitments
- Debt reduction or loans
- Endowments or reserves
- Special events, sponsorships, promotions or conferences
- Organizations that discriminate in any way
- Policy, advocacy or research
- Political causes, candidates, organizations or campaigns
- Type III supporting organizations under IRC section 509(a)(3)

Pre-Application Information:

The next application deadline is January 15, 2020, 5:00 PM. The review process takes about four months.

Spring 2020 Cycle:
- Begin accepting applications: November 18, 2019
- Application Deadline (5 pm): January 15, 2020
- Grant Decisions will be made: May 16, 2020

Fall 2020 Cycle:
- Begin accepting applications: May 18, 2020
- Application Deadline (5 pm): July 1, 2020
- Grant Decisions will be made: Mid-November 2020

Applications must be submitted online (preferred) or received in the office by 5 p.m. on the deadline date. Faxed or emailed applications are not accepted. If a deadline falls on a weekend, the application is due the preceding Friday.

Although not required, the Foundation strongly recommends the submission of LOIs for first-time applicants, those who have been turned down in the past, or those who are uncertain of fit and alignment with the Foundation’s interests. A letter of inquiry submitted within three weeks of a grant deadline may not be reviewed until the following grant cycle.

Only one application per organization is accepted per calendar year.

Organizations receiving funding for two consecutive calendar years must take one year before re-applying.

Challenge or matching grants are issued on occasion in the spring funding cycle, generally not by request but rather when the Foundation feels it would be beneficial to the organization.
