Grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 to Colorado nonprofits, schools, faith-based organizations, and agencies for programs in the areas of early childhood development and education and teen pregnancy prevention. Priority is given to projects that address underserved populations and those in rural areas of the state.

Funding priority at this time is on programs that support the education and development of children ages zero to five.

The majority of grants will be of the following types:
- Program/project support
- Operating support
- Technical assistance
- Capital improvements (limited to early childhood programs)

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants are most often awarded within the $10,000 to $50,000 range. Appropriate funding amounts will vary depending on the program or project.

Term of Contract:

Grants are typically for one year only. Long-term grantees may be considered to apply for two-year grants by invitation only.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants include all types of tax-exempt organizations, including nonprofits, school districts, government entities, and faith-based organizations.

Grants will be given only to organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or government entities. Applicants must be categorized “not a private foundation” under section 509(a) of the Code.

Child care centers are required to have a license.

The Buell Foundation is no longer funding constructive activities programs.

Grants are not made to or for the following:
- Endowments
- Individuals
- International programs and activities
- Legislative lobbying or support of political candidates
- Litigation
- Loans
- Medical programs
- Multi-year awards
- Past operating deficits
- Programs outside the state of Colorado
- Projects promoting religion
- Retirement of debt
- Sponsorship of events, annual campaigns, membership drives, or conferences
- Testimonial dinners

Pre-Application Information:

Applicants are encouraged to call the Program Officer for your region before you apply. Through this call, you can determine whether your project is a good fit for the Foundation, determine an appropriate request amount, and get all of your questions answered.

Deadlines are January 15 and the first business day of May and September. If January 15 falls on a weekend or the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, proposals must be in the office by 5:00 p.m. the following business day. One hard copy of the application must be in the office by 5:00 p.m. on the following dates. The Foundation does not accept applications via fax or email.

Applications for school-year-only programs will not be accepted for the May deadline.

Final grant decisions are made and monies are released approximately four months after each deadline.

Child Care Centers and Preschools: In addition to the Colorado Common Grant, please submit your most recent child care license, quality rating scores (e.g. Colorado Shines, NAEYC, or ERS) and the Buell Foundation Child Center Worksheet.

Your proposal will be assigned to one of the Foundation’s Program Officers for review. This review will include a thorough analysis of your organization’s programs and financial statements, a site visit, and a report to the Board of Trustees.

Approximately four months after your proposal submission, the Board of Trustees will be provided with a report prepared by the Program Officers about each applicant.

Organizations are limited to one grant request in any 12-month period (e.g., if a proposal is submitted for the May deadline, an organization is first eligible to reapply the following May).
