Grants to Colorado nonprofit organizations and PreK-12 public school teachers, staff, and administrators in eligible locations for programs and projects that foster life-changing educational experiences. Applicants must submit a letter of inquiry and talk to program staff prior to a full application. Funding may be used for programs, materials, and technology. Grants are intended to assist educators in serving students of all ages, abilities, and academic interest areas in La Plata County.

The Foundation encourages innovative ideas, pilot programs, and efforts to promote excellence in classrooms and programs that serve the 9-R students. 

Preference will be given to proposals:

  1. That serve the greater number of students;
  2. With research and/or evidence-based rationale; should be able to exemplify the issue and/or opportunity addressed, goals and objectives, activities and timeline;
  3. That are inclusive – do not exclude students based on their financial ability to participate.
  4. Meets Performance Indicator(s) as set forth by District 9-R

Term of Contract:

Grants must be fully implemented within one year of award. Exceptions must have DEF approval.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are open to any teacher, staff member or administrator in Durango School District 9-R. They are also open to other nonprofit organizations with programs that serve the students in Durango 9-R.

Organizations outside of School District 9-R must be a 501(c)3 non-profit. Grant must impact 9-R classrooms/students and must be sponsored by a 9-R Staff/School. Submit directly to DEF either electronically or on paper. DEF will direct the application through the 9-R internal grant process, if necessary. Use of a 9-R facility or incorporation into a 9-R program will require building supervisor’s permission; please document permission(s) in the grant application.

Areas that will not be awarded:
- Staff, substitute, and administrative salaries
- Professional development expenses, except if they are a part of a larger grant proposal
- Items otherwise adequately funded (or planned to be funded) in the 9-R budget
- Athletics, e.g. programs, travel, facilities, or equipment

Pre-Application Information:

Inquiries are welcome year-round but there are two funding cycles (Fall and Spring) and a three-step process including a Letter of Inquiry, Grant Application, and Post-Grant Evaluation.

Application Cycle:
Spring: March 1 - May 10
Fall: 2nd Monday of September - Friday before 9-R Thanksgiving Break.

Submit grant applications as early as possible; this will allow time to review and make necessary revisions to any missing information or errors.

Grant status notification: Allow up to 4 weeks after the application cycle has closed.

Before submitting a full application, applicants should submit a letter of inquiry and discuss the grant proposal with the Executive Director to ensure it will be considered by the DEF Grants Committee.
